Che Gelida Manina (Your Tiny Hand Is Frozen)
Still, a lot has happened between then and now. It felt good to see the Wales Millennium Centre again, looking resplendent in the sunshine of a September evening. I confess that I still get butterflies in my stomach as I take my seat before a night at the Opera. The setting is Paris around , and the poet and his painter friend Marcello David Kempster are starving and freezing, as it is winter and they have no money. Act I is set on Christmas Eve, but the two friends have nothing to eat and nowhere to go. Fortunately, their musician friend Schaunard Daniel Grice turns up with money and provisions.
It was billed a highlight of Covent Garden's year: opera's off-again, on-again power couple Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu were performing for the first time in years, two decades after meeting on the same stage in the same production of Puccini's masterpiece. But, like the football in Donetsk, it was a row about technology that overshadowed the evening. As the overture began, the heavy stage curtains failed for the first time ever, thanks to an electrical fault. A stage assistant, without a microphone, emerged to shout that they were trying to fix the problem. But no one in the upper amphitheatre, where we sat, could hear her, and it took 30 minutes to sort it out.
This is not intended to be a singable translation, it'a quick and dirty almost literal translation. I don't recall all of the singable translation that I knew as a teenager it's 60 years since I learnt it ; if I can find it somewhere on the web or somehow remember it I'll add that translation too. Puccini's opera is a cornerstone of the repertoire. It has the garret, the bohemians, and Mimi; but it doesn't have "Your tiny hand is frozen" or any of Puccini's other hit numbers. That's because it's by Ruggero Leoncavallo, who maintains a toehold on the repertoire with his I Pagliacci but is otherwise a name from the history books. Until now. Given that in the years since its premiere, Leoncavallo's version has been overshadowed by Puccini's, it may also be the company's last production of the opera, but things might have turned out very differently.
