Everything You Need to Know About the Maze Runner Universe Before Watching 'The Death Cure'
Enois Duarte. Three years ago, The Maze Runner hit theaters at a time when the craze for adapting YA novels was starting to finally wane. However, the sci-fi dystopian vision of humanity's demise stood out with its unique premise and an ensemble of likable characters that were challenged with mature themes, which were later expanded upon in the sequel. This weekend sees the series' third and final installment hit cinemas, bringing to a close the battle against being treated as test subjects to a mysterious organization's nefarious schemes. Going blind to the trilogy's conclusion can be confusing and puzzling, like trying to navigate through a convoluted labyrinth of cryptic phrases and made-up nonsense. But no worries, we're here to help guide you through the twists and turns of this elaborate maze. Here is everything you need to know, with brief recaps of the previous entries, about the Maze Runner universe before you watch The Death Cure.
In the opening scene of The Maze Runner , our uniquely special protagonist Thomas wakes up on a zooming elevator with his mind wiped clean of memories. Mild spoilers in the service of trying to figure out what the hell is going on. That explained nothing. Is this just more YA dystopia? Sort of. Roaming around the maze are Grievers — half goopy spider, half machine creatures — which can kill you.
Honest Trailers - The Maze Runner
A quick refresher: in the first film, we met Thomas, who woke up in the middle of a complicated AF maze controlled by a sinister organization known as WCKD , with no memory of his past. After banding together with a crew of other boys known as the Gladers , Thomas and his squad struggled to find a way out of the maze… facing plenty of danger along the way. After escaping the maze only to find out it was phase one of a sinister test, in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials , the Gladers searched for clues about the mysterious organization WCKD, which was all about conducting experiments on teens and guess who they were targeting next? Phase two was wild. Between escaping the labs and finally finding the Right Arm resistance group, a whoooole lot of shit goes down.
