This harrowing, Hugo Award-winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Almost two decades into their rule a resistance has emerged fueled by mysterious films that show a reality much like our own.

Set in , fifteen years after an alternative ending to World War II , the novel concerns intrigues between the victorious Axis Powers —primarily, Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany —as they rule over the former United States, as well as daily life under the resulting totalitarian rule. Beginning in , the book was adapted as a multi-season TV series , with Dick's daughter, Isa Dick Hackett , serving as one of the show's producers. The novel features a "novel within the novel" comprising an alternate history within this alternate history wherein the Allies defeat the Axis though in a manner distinct from the actual historical outcome. The Nazis then, with help of their allies, conquered most of Africa. By , the US and the remaining Allies surrendered to the Axis, ending the war. Hawthorne Abendsen , the "Man in the High Castle" is a collector of these films. Major events shown in the newsreels include mass executions of people who are known to be alive after a Nazi nuclear attack on San Francisco in the s, and Stalin being alive in , instead of his having died in in the series' chronology, and in our world. The TV series offers little information about Roosevelt, although it does mention he was assassinated before taking office. While the TV series doesn't specify the identity of the murderer or when the assassination took place, it's generally assumed to be the same as in the novel. The characters in the TV series occasionally discuss Roosevelt's demise.
